Throwback Thursday: Squad Build Off

So I started getting a lot of lovely little memories on google photos about one of my favorite competition entries that I did last summer!

The GunplaBuilderAssociation ran the Summer Squad build-off and the theme was squads (duh) of 3 or more kits that share a common theme.

I had three HG zakus and one HG Sinanju. I liked the concept of using primary colors and only using them for each Zaku. One red, one blue, one yellow, and then the Sinanju being the leader and having all three. The painting process took quite a bit of time due to priming all four kits. Base coating them. Hand painting, which was honestly the longest part, and then top coating.

The squad name is “Primoris Squad” and Latin names are used for most of the units.

I was worried that it wouldn’t work out well but it did!

Fun fact: the yellow Zaku is missing a hand and thus is just a cannon arm. (The woes of having a young puppy at home and dropping a part)

The Snap up

Steam-lined this zakus in one go!

Priming

Priming it all took about a day or two. The base layers took longer. Yellow can be a finicky color to work with.

Hand Painting

It took a good week to do all of this! However, I had a lot of fun making some designs that I would like to use again in future builds.

The Finished Products

Caeruleum Unit (Blue)

Rubrum Unit (Red)

Flavus Unit (Yellow)

Primoris Squad Leader

Very little hand painting was done on this.

The Squad Together

I hope you found this post enjoyable. Have any questions or opinions? If so share them in the comments.

Happy Thursday everyone!

  1. These are unbelievably gorgeous. Could you share some about your process? (Paint brands, airbrush used and settings, stuff like that)
