From Our Friends At TurboDork

So today I received a charming package from our friends over at TurboDork! Well, I would like to show you the lovely bright pink bubble mailer it came in but unfortunately, I tore into it like a raccoon on trash day. What excited me more than the bubble mailer was what was inside of it.

(Quick note, I’m not sponsored by TurboDork, I just genuinely love their paints! Greg and Meredith are great folk who have always been supportive!)

Inside were 12 lovely bottles of paints from the not-yet-released Expansion 5 (plus 2 others). Now I really do enjoy their paintings. I find them to be bright and vibrant. They genuinely fit very well into my paint pallet. I haven’t had any issues with them so far. There can be issues that come from them being in freezing temps and such but customer support is very responsive.

Some tips for TurboDork paints that I learned along the way:

  • Some colors will look different on a white, gray, or black primer.
  • Shake the bottle very well, then shake shake shake some more.
  • Airbrush or hand paint thin coats.
  • Airbrushing, with a 0.5 nozzle, 25 psi recommendation. Thin is out to a 3:1 paint-to-airbrush ratio.
  • Experiment by mixing colors.

The Paints

The Metallics

These contain cool pigments to get nice metal effects. This set came with four cool metallic colors!

Turboshifts

These paints change color depending on what angle of light is hitting them! Don’t worry about what appears to be a lack of pigment, these are great over black primers.

Zenishifts

Another awesome form of color-shifting paint! The dominate color depends on the color of the primer used.

Bonus Paints!

Two awesome metallics!

I started using them the same day!

I’m working on this funky Zaku Hello Kitty with textured paint. I airbrushed a black primer on it before dry brushing with Summoning Sickness, Appleseed, and Fae Wylds. I feel like it’s gaining an interesting stone golem/fae feel to it!

There’s a lot that can be done with these paints so I highly recommend checking them out! These paints drop mid-October!

Side note:

Check out this cool article I did with Gunpla101 this week about “ruining your gunpla”!

I hope you found this post enjoyable. Have any questions or opinions? If so share them in the comments.

Happy Thursday everyone!

  1. 3:1 !
TY! lol. I got an apathetic shrug in response to “How do I think this? Do I need to thin it?” when I picked a few bottles up at the LHS.

Can I ask what airbrush thinner you use? I think TurboDork is solvent free, but I am not at all sure.
