You think growing up on the internet with unlimited access to 4chan, Tumblr, and Reddit would leave little to catch me off guard, but here we are. So if I had to learn about this, does everyone else.
I was today old when I was informed about an interesting bit of Tumblr history. Now, I’m not one to mock other people and what they do fandom-wise. I was a Homestuck fan who typed like the characters when I was younger and often roleplayed text-wise with friends. It was bad in a “hey look at my goofy, cringe, middle school self” way. So I get being weird with what you like.
I do.
Now you might be wondering what snapewives are. Snapewives were an online community, or a small cult, of individuals who believed Snape was the true Godโthe only one to ever exist.
The grumpy greasy emo professor from Harry Potter.
They also believe that Snape was a godlike entity living in an astral plane that possessed the franchise’s author to write about. However, he became disenfranchised with her when she began to write him wrong. As well as the fact that he was killed off.
Snapeists, an alternate name to snape-wives, believed that their creation was due to this tomfoolery and that’s why Snape comes to them. They can serve Snape by “marrying” him and becoming sister wives.
Granted, Snape is okay with some of these women having one, only one, male partner in their lives so that he can take over their physical bodies during… Intimate moments. A moment of silence for that one snapewive who was married and her husband had to compete with a fictional character.
How do you become a Snapewive?
Well, you need to be a full traditional wife to him. Don’t be stupid, or peppy, and be someone who is a female version of Snape. You’ll find out if you’re worthy because Snape will reach out to you through chosen Snapewives who can communicate with him.
If you’re asking about how they feel about Lily. Well, the misogyny is coming from inside the house in this case. They were not fond of the character and feel like her betrayal of snape was equivalent to a cardinal sin.
There’s a lot more that goes into this and honestly, I’m still going blank even thinking about it. Granted I’m not fully surprised by this. Having grown up on Tumblr, fanfiction.net, and AO3, this kind of obsession is nothing new (minus the religious aspect).
This applies to most major fandoms.
There’s a video that I liked on the topic that covered it well:
As well as an academic paper on it by Zoe Alderton:
โSnapewivesโ and โSnapeismโ: A Fiction-Based Religion within the Harry Potter Fandom
My thing with it is that Snape is a terrible character. He’s not meant to be a good guy, just a bad guy who does a few good things. He’d be incredibly unhealthy to get into a relationship with like what, one fight with Lily and he’s throwing slurs?
Like I’m under the impression that He only loved Lily because she gave him a sliver of attention. Unhealthy attachment issues. Nice Guy Energy. Big incel vibes.
Unfortunately, the community eventually broke apart from inside drama and outside bullying. There were arguments about how other wives picture Snape? Some said he was a …dominant personality, so to speak. Others said he was a more gentle, more tame. Or some didn’t love Snape more than others. Some of the women moved onto different fictional characters. Whatever dark broody character of the week it is now.
One thing that I like about the video is the point of everyone mocking these women when honestly people get way more into characters and fandoms. The religious aspect is weird but do you know how many images of people with massive NSFW anime figurines I’ve seen? Far too much.
(Also, The youtuber has a point about Sport fans. As someone who grew up in Patriot land, I can verify this completely. They get way to obsessed with it. Too much energy on who can catch a ball, throw a ball, and if it was actually deflated.)

I do want to say that there’s nothing wrong with having a character you really enjoy. I know I do. I have several. Hellboy, Various Predators from the Predator Franchise, and a list too long. There does come a point where it begins to become too much of an obsession when it starts to impact your own mental health and relationships. So if you’re ever feeling too obsessed with a character, take a small step back for a while. Where are those characters going to go?
No where. They’re fictional.
