I love mages. They’re just a bunch of silly little dudes with spells that can slay hordes of monsters.
The Spell Brigade is an early-access fantasy rogue-lite game developed and published by Bolt Blaster Games. Play solo, with friends, or in an online team of up to four. Each provides a fun edge to the game.
You run around the map, mastering spells and killing monsters! There are multiple maps and difficulty levels that can be unlocked.
There’s a plethora of mages to choose from with the latest updates:
- Reginald
- Signature spell: Astral Orbs
- Kavin
- Rocky Road
- Moon Mage
- Moonerang
- Sun Mage
- Solar Pulse
- Star Mage
- Falling Stars
- Ludwig
- Arcane Broadsword
- Wizard King
- Magic Missile
- Capenelli
- Phantom Blades
- Wizard King
- Magic Missile
My personal favorites are the Sun Mages and Star Mages. Their designs are adorable, as well as the lore between them. Their little run movements are pretty cute as well!

The different outfits add a nice variety. I haven’t gotten the other Star Mage outfits.
I do have a small headcanon that Sun Mages can accidentally give people sunburns or hurt their eyes if stared at for too long.

Gameplay is fun! Some people found it to be boring. You often get the same spells, and the later spell slots often aren’t as leveled as your earlier spell slots. I personally don’t mind this. I’m a person who will stick with the same spells but will try different fusion combos.
Plasma is my favorite fusion during gameplay! It’s one fusion I aim for in every run.

Co-op is a bonus with this game, which is a rarity in this genre. My partner and I play it together. If he’s not available, then I use the online co-op. I haven’t had much luck finding more than one player to play with at a time. The most I’ve played with was two other people.
(I’m trying to convince my friends to get this game.)
This game is still being updated, so I’m far more forgiving of the lack of diversity in certain aspects. The final boss is the same in every level. The monsters are the same in every level. Even the mages themselves only have differences in minor starting spells and stats. Friendly fire is a thing in this game. I like the challenge of friendly fire at times, but not all the time.

Personally, I’d like to see the mages have spells unique to them. Even if it’s just one starting spell. Stats-wise, I’m not good at keeping track of what stat does what. I just throw things at my build and see what works.
I liked the game, contrary to what others have said. There’s room to grow and improve, as the early access has been out since September?
The creators did state in the 0.6.3 update that they would be adding an endless mode and a no-friendly fire mode, which would be awesome. This update is set to release on Black Friday? So perhaps we’ll see a larger update on November 29th?
