Magic the Gathering: Gundam Edition

Magic the Gathering and Gundam are two things that I love dearly. I’ve been a magic player for ten years and a gunpla builder for roughly six years.

With Wizards of the Coast putting out more and more universes beyond set, such as Jurassic Park and Fallout, I wondered what it would be like if Wizards put out a Gundam set.

The likelihood of this happening is slim, if possible. So I decided to take this into my own hands. Since the beginning of the month, I decided to start crafting Gundam-themed magic cards. It shouldn’t be too difficult if I just slapped cards and graphics together.

I didn’t want just to throw together cards and call it a day. I wanted a set that I could play with, if I wanted to, and one that was cohesive. The cards and characters should match the vision I had of the mana pie.

For those of you unaware, the color pie is the base color of the game. Red, blue, white, green, and black. All of them have their characteristics and themes that I want to match to the characters in the Gundam series as best as I can.

I spent a lot of time watching and diving into Magic lore and break-down videos.

Here are some of my favorites:

Now these cards are all currently rough drafts. They’re not perfect and I do take recommendations.

The goal is to have anywhere from 120 to 145 cards in this set. I currently have thirteen made and twenty drafted on paper so far. The next step after I have a whole set of rough drafts is to finalize them and then get them proxy printed. I am going to upload all finalized cards here so that others can use them as they please or until the Pinkertons show up at my house.

If anyone has any thoughts or feedback feel free to drop a comment or reach out to me! I’d be glad to hear back.

  1. Please consider that once the Big Zam is mass produced the Federation will be finished. What I’m saying is: it needs token deck synergy.
I like this overall. Great idea. With Universes Beyond being a big financial success lately, maybe this doesn’t have to be just a dream, especially if the Final Fantasy set next year goes well for WotC.

    1. Thanks for the support! It has been interesting to work out the mechanics of this set. I’ve had some recommendations of adding in crews as well.

I’m interested to see where the universes beyond go

  3. Colony drop could be a white mana card that exiles all permanently except artifacts
Char is a character that can evolve so maybe a flip or make him 3 cards
“Char the red comet, lieutenant Quattro ace pilot, and char leader of neo zeon and zabi family rite could be called zabi family curse and the mobile suits could probably be vehicles with a color designated to them as well

I am not criticizing you choices or creations just dropping my 3 cents I think what you made is rad af keep up the good work

  4. I don’t see this being out of the range of possibility at all. UB releases do really well and make for nice standalone commander sets too. The wh40k set is great, so I can see them doing Gundam if they can negotiate the rights issues.
